Science plays a part in everything around us, from the food that we eat to the technology behind space exploration. It makes incredible things possible. The Scottish Government Science campaign is aimed at secondary school kids to encourage them to choose a career in Science.

Client brief and objectives

We were asked to create a campaign site that would make teenagers think again about science by capturing their imagination through their core interests. The campaign aimed to challenge misconceptions about science amongst secondary school children and encourage more young people to consider science courses at college and university.

Our approach

Working closely with the Scottish Government, PR and marketing agencies we developed the website and online advertising. Based on extensive research it worked on the broad premise that most teenagers are interested in three things: football, fashion and music and showed how those interests could lead them into a science career.

We created a mind-map style tool to allow users to explore some of the possibilities. Additional functionality came in the form of an interactive Flash game and the "is Science for You" quiz, a tongue-in-cheek approach to encourage teens to think differently about science, as well as using inspiring video case studies of people in great science careers.

To support the campaign and drive traffic we devised MPU and banner ads.

Results and effectiveness

During the seven-week lifespan of the campaign, the site clocked up page views exceeding 116,000 and over 57,000 visits. The site was also nominated for a Roses Design award in 2009.
